5 Scratch Tricks Most Beginners Miss

๐Ÿ“… Jun 2026 ยท ๐Ÿ“– 4 min read

Once you've made a few Scratch projects, these five tricks take them from "pretty good" to "wow, how did you build that?!"

1. Clone blocks. Instead of drawing ten enemies by hand, draw one and tell Scratch to "create a clone of myself." Each clone can move and act on its own โ€” perfect for bullets, coins or a crowd of characters.

2. Custom variables. A variable called score or lives lets your game remember things between screens. Try making a "health" variable that goes down when your sprite touches danger.

3. Broadcast messages. Broadcasts let one sprite tell every other sprite "go!" at the same moment โ€” brilliant for starting a race or triggering a cutscene.

4. My Blocks. If you find yourself copying the same stack of blocks again and again, turn it into a custom block. Cleaner project, fewer bugs.

5. Backdrops as scenes. Switching backdrops (not just costumes) is how professional-feeling Scratch games change levels or rooms without needing ten separate projects.
